Surely, you might be thinking, other websites haven’t targeted these keywords for a reason?

Well, this isn’t entirely the case. In a small number of cases, this may be accurate; a selection of keywords may not be grammatically or factually accurate, and targeting these may be problematic for an article. However, in many cases, low-competition keywords aren’t a major problem; they’ve just been overlooked by the big websites and brands in favour of higher traffic keywords.

Low Vs. High Volume Keywords

So, with that being said, what makes low competition keywords important if even the legitimate low competition keywords tend to have a lower monthly search volume? The critical aspect to consider for this decision is the ease of targeting lower competition keywords.

Let’s consider the following example: a high competition keyword has 10,000 search volume monthly, while another low competition keyword has only 300 search volume per month.

Looking at these statistics alone, it might seem like an obvious choice to select the high-volume keyword – however, since this also has high competition, a lot of other websites are competing to rank for this keyword. This can make it incredibly hard, if not almost impossible, to break through and get your site ranking for these keywords. As such, of that 10,000, you might do well if you can even get a handful of views.

However, for the lower-volume, lower-competition keyword, you’ll have a much better chance at ranking on the first page. Despite the lower search volume, this could drastically increase the number of people seeing your site in the results to potentially all 300, if you were to rank first.

As such, in summary, you’ll usually do a lot better ranking on the first page for a low volume and competition keyword than ranking on the tenth page for a high volume and competition keyword. As such, finding and targeting low competition keywords is evidently crucial – and we’ll summarize how to do this as follows.

How to Find Low Competition Keywords

Now that we have clarified the importance of targeting low competition keywords, we need to consider how to find these keywords. Indeed, it can be easy to guess what some of the highest volume keywords will be; often, these will be individual words as opposed to phrases.

However, just because you have selected a phrase or question as your keyword does not necessarily mean that it is a low competition keyword. In fact, as demonstrated in the image below (derived from Wordtracker, a free-to-use keyword and market research tool), some keyword phrases can also have high competition all the same.

As such, keyword research is crucial. As already mentioned, online keyword research tools such as Wordtracker allow a website owner to find suitable keywords to target. Ideally, you should look for keywords that have a high volume (ie., the number of people searching per month), a low competition score, and a low IAAT (“in anchor and title”) score. These are the websites that will be your biggest competitors for that keyword, and if you can choose a keyword that has a low or even 0 score for competition and/or IAAT, you’ll immediately have far greater success with your SEO marketing efforts.

From the same search as shown in the example above, there are plenty of selections for keywords that have little or no competition and low IAAT scores, making these keywords potentially excellent choices to target. For example, at the time of writing, one keyword achieved on average almost 3000 monthly searches, but had no direct competition or IAAT score. Meanwhile, another choice of two keywords had low competition scores of 3.97 and a score of just 1 for IAAT.

Take Care When Choosing and Using Keywords

Of course, as we already mentioned, it’s crucial to choose keywords that you can target effectively in your content without endangering the grammatical accuracy of the content. As such, if a keyword doesn’t make grammatical sense, you may need to use variants of that keyword (for example, “SEO services US” vs “SEO services in the US”) to keep your website content high-quality.

Low-quality writing will only serve to drag your website down in the search engine rankings, and no amount of keyword stuffing can change that these days. So, make the right choices for your website’s SEO efforts instead, and only use the most effective and reliable SEO strategies.
